Charles's Story

Charles LeRoy Kersey, 84, of Indianapolis, formerly of Lebanon, passed away suddenly Aug. 23, 2016. He was born Sept. 24, 1931, in Lebanon, to the now late Clyde L. and Ruth Anna Fosnight Kersey.
Charles graduated from Lebanon High School in 1949. Shortly thereafter, he attended acting classes in Hollywood, making friends with then budding actors James Dean and JoAnna Linville.
He left Hollywood upon being drafted into the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean conflict. Chuck was named honor man of his platoon in basic training. After his military service ended, he enrolled at Butler University.
He was the office manager for Sweeney Construction for many years. Charles then attended culinary arts school at Ivy Tech, which included studying in Paris, France. He graduated in 1990. Charles was chef and owner of Chuck's Custom Catering for several years.
Chuck was an expert handyman, possessing many skills. He enjoyed entertaining family and friends with his gourmet cooking. His annual entries of canned goods at the Indiana State Fair received many awards. Charles enjoyed viewing classic movies, reading and spoiling his dogs.
He was a member of the American Legion, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, The Indianapolis Zoo and the Indianapolis Humane Society.
Charles is survived by his brothers, Donald Kersey of Pinellas Park, Fla., and William Kersey of Lebanon; seven nieces and nephews; two great-nieces and two great-nephews; and five great-great-nieces and -nephews. Chuck is also survived by his best friend and companion of 47 years, Leslie Durbin. He was preceded in death by his sister, Violet Caldwell; brother-in-law, Don Caldwell; sisters-in-law, Marilyn and Shirley Kersey; and nephew, Douglas Kersey.
Visitation will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28, at Shirley Brothers Fishers-Castleton Chapel, 9900 Allisonville Rd., Indianapolis. Celebration of life services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. Interment will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 29, at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Indianapolis Animal Care and Control and/or the Humane Society of Indianapolis.
