Charles Robert "Bob" Parr entered the Church Triumphant on Tuesday, April 4, 2017. Bob was born June 5, 1926, the son of the now late Willett H. Parr Jr., and Mary Jane Lenox Parr of Lebanon.
Bob graduated from Lebanon High School in 1943. He then served two years in the Philippines in World War 2, on the staff of General Douglas MacArthur. On returning from the war, he graduated from Indiana University where he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. After graduating from the Indiana University School of Law in 1951, he practiced law at the family firm in Lebanon, Parr, Parr, and Parr (now Parr, Ritchy, Frandsen, Patterson and Kruse) for many years. Later he became vice president and chief counsel for Mutual Security Life Insurance Company based in Fort Wayne, for 20 years. He was a member of Rotary Club both in Lebanon and Fort Wayne.
On June 26, 1948, he married Martha Ann Honan in Lebanon. They became the proud parents of the Rev. Carol Honan Parr of Boiling Springs, Pa.; Kirk Lenox (Dr. Sharon) Parr, M.D., of Zionsville; and Kent Crooks (the Rev. Pamela Abbey) Parr, Esq., of Concord Calif.
Bob was a Sunday school teacher for teenagers, young adults and older adults for many, many years at Centenary United Methodist Church and Otterbein UMC in Lebanon.
In 1962 he and Martha began hosting exchange students in their home, doing so for several years, through the Youth for Understanding Exchange Program, Ann Arbor, Mich. They have remained close to and in contact with the young men who lived with them, as well as with their subsequent wives and children. All are considered family, even with the passing of the years, and there has been much visiting back and forth in the ensuing years.
Bob, for many years, served on the board of trustees for the Malpas Scholarship at Depauw University, which has given four-year full scholarships to hundreds of students in Indiana since 1963. He also was instrumental in establishing the Carl Scering Scholarship at Indiana University, Bloomington, and served on its board of trustees for 30 years or more.
Bob was a member of Broadway United Methodist Church.
Grandchildren include Joshua Murtorff of Carlisle, Pa., Nathan Murtorff of Mechanicsburg, Pa., Gabriel Murtorff of Hatboro, Pa., Luke Parr, M.D., of Portland, Ore., and Natalie Parr (Cory) Mead, D.O. (Cory) of Rockford, Mich.
Bob was pre-deceased by his parents; his sister, Mary Margaret Lowder; and son, Kevin Daniel.
Calling will be from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 15, at Otterbein United Methodist Church, 804 S. Lebanon St., Lebanon. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the church. The Rev. Carol Honan Parr will be officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations sent to Otterbein United Methodist Church, 804 S. Lebanon St., Lebanon, IN 46052; or the Rolla M. Malpas Trust Scholarship Fund.
