Charles Smith, 95, of Pittsboro, passed away on Wednesday, July 5, 2017, at Homewood Health Campus in Lebanon. He was born on March 31, 1922, in Boone County, a son of the now late Roscoe Smith and Alta (White) Smith.
Charles was a 1940 graduate of Pinnell High School. Following high school, he entered into the United States Army Air Corps, and served his country with honor.
Charles then attended the GI School of Agriculture.
He was married to Mildred Maxine Byrkett on Oct. 19, 1942, in Lebanon. Mildred passed away on Aug. 30, 2016.
Charles had farmed grain and livestock all of his life, in both Boone and Hendricks counties. He loved what he did and took great pride in it.
He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather.
Charles was a member of the Pittsboro United Methodist Church.
Survivors include children, Charles D. Smith Jr. (Kathryn, deceased) of Lebanon, Lee Smith of Pittsboro and Suzie Davidson (Tom) of Lebanon; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, Charles was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathryn Jean Smith; sister, Joann Bailey; and brothers, Robert Smith and Gene Smith.
Visitation is planned for 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, July 8, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. Funeral services are planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at the mortuary. Interment with military rites will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lebanon.
