Earnest's Story

Earnest Alvin "Ernie" Lafferty, 82, of Kirklin, passed away peacefully, while surrounded by his loving family, on Saturday, July 1, 2017, at St. Vincent Hospice in Indianapolis. He was born on Dec. 13, 1934, in Allen, Ky., the son of the now late Clark and Dona (Gray) Lafferty.
On Nov. 9, 1956, he was married to Violet Irene Pierce at the Bible Church in Sheridan; she survives.
Raised in Kentucky, Ernie graduated from Maytown High School in 1953, where he played on the basketball team. Following high school, he attended Alice Lloyd Community College.
In 1956, he relocated to Sheridan.
Ernie retired in 1991 from Detroit Diesel Allison Division as a tool trouble mechanic, after more than 30 years of service.
Active in his community, he served as president of the Kirklin Town Board, on the Kirklin Township Advisory Board, and was a longtime member of the Kirklin Lions Club and Frankfort Moose Lodge. In addition, he was a faithful member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Lebanon.
Ernie was a proud father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved his family and friends with his whole heart.
He enjoyed showing off his 1968 Chevy Camaro, watching NCAA basketball, and was an avid fan of the Kentucky Wildcats.
Survivors include wife, Violet I. Lafferty of Kirklin; children, Monica E. Lafferty Kiger and husband, Dan "Kige," of Thorntown, David E. Lafferty and wife, Julie, of Kirklin, Darrin S. Lafferty of Kirklin, and Dennis A. Lafferty and wife, Tiffany of Windfall; five granddaughters, Carrie Baird and husband, Kurt, Jessica Metz and husband, Nate, Annie Shaughnessy, Molly Shaughnessy and Grace Lafferty; two stepgrandchildren, Paul Morrison and Tina Field; three great-grandchildren, Caden Baird, Casey Baird and Camryn Baird; three stepgreat-grandsons, Donavon Morrison, Devon Field and Harmon Field; two brothers, Glenn Lafferty and wife, Susie, of Thorntown, and David Lafferty and wife, Iris "Rookie," of Nicholasville, Ky.; sister, Betty Patton of Pikeville, Ky.; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Ernie was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Paul Patton.
Visitation is planned for 4 to 8 p.m. today, July 6, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 7, at Centenary United Methodist Church, 910 E. Fordice Road, Lebanon, with the Rev. Anthony Stone officiating. Interment will follow at Crown View Cemetery in Sheridan.
