Gailord "Gene"'s Story
Gailord Eugene "Gene" Stiles, Jr. passed away on Friday, March 9, 2018 at the Waters of Lebanon.
Gene was born in Indianapolis on July 23, 1934 to the late Gailord E. Stiles, Sr. and Jessie Marie (Laughlin) Stiles. He studied Agronomy courses at Purdue University for qualification as Superintendent at Golf Courses. He first married Marilyn Harrison in 1951, they later divorced and he remarried Joanna Sue "Jo" Fletcher on April 13, 1978.
Gene started in golf as a caddie at the age of nine at the Broadmoor Country Club in Indianapolis. He turned pro at the age of 16 and was the PGA Apprentice working at Broadmoor County Club, Woodstock Country Club and Tippecanoe Lake Country Club.
He became the head pro at Beeson Park Golf Club in Winchester, Indiana and was the youngest pro in the state at the time, serving there eight years. He returned to Indianapolis in 1961 and was very involved with A.J. Thatcher Golf Club where he completed construction of the course for the city of Indianapolis. In 1967 he was appointed Head Pro at the Northeast Way Golf Club, which is now Sahm Golf Course in Castleton.
Gene moved to Lebanon in the fall of 1969 when he purchased the 9-hole Golf Club from George Cox. He later designed and built the new Cool Lake Golf Club in 1986 and continued to operate the club until 1996. Gene was an active member of the Thorntown Lions Club, where he was a past president and instrumental in the formation of the Turning Leaves Car Show in Thorntown.
He will be remembered as a man who loved golf. Gene was a well-respected member of the PGA and known for his dedication and many years of hard work. He and his wife enjoyed their retirement years traveling to Tennessee and Florida.
Survivors include his wife, Joanna Sue "Jo" Fletcher of Thorntown; sons, Michael E. (Sharon) Stiles of Noblesville and Brian N. Stiles and companion, Rudy of West Hollywood, Calif.; daughters, Christa G. (Jeff) Allen of Lebanon and Kelley M. (Rick) Wright of Lebanon; sisters, Shirley Lane-McBride (Gary) of Laguna Vista, Texas and Doris Marie Eikanger of Silver City, N.M.; brother, Dave (Doris) Stiles of Fishers; four grandchildren, Mathew (Dana) Allen of Noblesville, Marisa Allen of Indianapolis, Chase Wright of Lebanon and Cade Wright of Lebanon; and two great-grandchildren, Jackson Allen and Evie Allen, both of Noblesville.
In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by three brothers, Richard N. "Dick" Stiles, Donald D. Stiles and Robert L. "Bob" Stiles.
Funeral Services are planned for 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 15, 2018 at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St. in Lebanon with Pastor Scott Ailes officiating. Visitation will be held from 3-7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at the funeral home in Lebanon. Interment will follow services at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.
