Gene's Story

Gene J. Thompson, 86, of Crawfordsville, passed away peacefully at home at 9:05 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2016. He was born on March 18, 1930, in Zionsville, to the now late Perl Ernest and Katie Ann (Wallace) Thompson.
Gene graduated from Dover High School, and proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War.
On March 23, 1957, he married the love of his life, Charmaine Elise Winslow, who preceded him in death on Feb. 3, 2013. He retired from RR Donnelley in 1991, after 46 years in Department CMP; worked at Turkey Run and View Golf Course; worked at the Indianapolis Speedway for the Indy 500 and the Brickyard 400; was a 63-year member of the Byron Cox American Legion Post #72; and enjoyed fishing, golfing and IU basketball.
He is survived by his son, Phil (Gina) Thompson of Crawfordsville; a daughter, Jena (Ken) Palmby of Aurora, Ill.; grandchildren, Seth and Connor Palmby, Clayton (Kelly), Arin (Dianne), Bryce and Adrianne (John Muller) Thompson, John and Scott Jones, and Samantha Shepherd; and great-grandchildren, Meadow Thompson, Chloe and Clayton Jones and Sawyer Muller.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Charmaine; sister, Geneva Riddle; and three brothers, Gordon L., Gerald P., and Garland S. Thompson. Friends may call from 5 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, at Powers-Priebe Funeral Home, 315 S. Washington St., Crawfordsville. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Dorman Winger officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill North Cemetery, with military rites by Crawfordsville American Legion and the United States Air Force.
