George's Story

Mr. George E. Campbell, 81, of Thorntown, passed away Monday morning, Jan. 30, 2017, at St. Vincent Hospice in Indianapolis. He was born in Crown Point on April 18, 1935, a son of the now late Charles William Campbell and Susan Catherine (Hessler) Campbell.
Following school, he joined the United States Marines and served his country during the Korean and Vietnam wars. George was a POW from 1953 to 1957.
On Jan. 14, 1984, he was married to Julia Lynne Parker. She survives.
George had owned and operated Campbell's Mowing for several years. Prior to that, he had worked in the maintenance departments at the Koala Center for 20 years, and the Lebanon McDonald's for 10 years.
He was a devoted husband and father, and was proud to be Loretta's dad. George enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a member of the Lighthouse Baptist Church in Lebanon for over 10 years.
Survivors include wife, Lynne Campbell of Thorntown; children, Loretta Jean Campbell of Thorntown, George Ellis Campbell Jr. of Florida, and Susan Catherine Byrum and husband, Shawn, of Indianapolis; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and sisters, Bernice Pittman of Crown Point, Susan Hamilton of Crown Point and Ida Mae Pittman of Merrillville.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by a son, Leland William Campbell; a brother, Charles Campbell Jr.; and two sisters, Betty Finklestein and Loretta Dixon.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 3, at Maple Lawn Cemetery in Thorntown.
Myers Mortuary has been entrusted with his arrangements for burial.
