Harold's Story

Mr. Harold W. "Bill" Peterman, of Lebanon, died at his home on Monday, Oct. 31, 2016, at the age of 96. He was born Feb. 19, 1920, in Lebanon, to Roy W. and Roxie Mille Peterman.
On Aug. 10, 1945, he was married to Rosemary Morse. She died in March of 1999. On Aug. 14, 2001, he married Susan Gurley, who survives.
Mr. Peterman graduated from Lebanon High School in 1938. He then worked for Shumate Printing until entering the United States Navy. He served in the Navy from December 1941 to October 1945, as an aviation machinist mate 1st class, stationed in the South Pacific during World War II.
After his service in the Navy, he moved to Indianapolis, where he lived for six years. He then returned to Lebanon, where he resided until his death.
Mr. Peterman was employed by the Federal Government as an electro-mechanic for the Federal Aviation Administration for 33 years, retiring in 1975. In this capacity, he traveled the states of Indiana, Illinois and Michigan. After retiring from the FAA, he was the Boone County CETA director from 1977 to 1981.
He was a member of the Lebanon First Baptist Church, Elks Lodge, VFW 40 & 8, American Legion, and was a past member of Ulen Country Club.
Before his health declined, he enjoyed golf, fishing and spending time in his summer home at Dogtooth Lake, Kenora, Ontario, Canada.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Craig W. Peterman of Whitestown; and a grandson, Scott W. Peterman of Conroe, Texas; stepchildren, Weson Gurley of Seattle, Jean (Ted) Mason-Hedges of Lebanon, Heather Gillespie of Danville; stepgrandsons, Nick (Cassia Garland) Mason, Spencer (Lisa) Mason, Clay Gillespie, Heath Gillespie and Sawyer Mason; stepgreat-grandsons, Corbin and Liam; nephews, Donald (Terri) Peterman of Lebanon and Charles (Annis) Peterman of Texas; sisters-in-law, Sharon Peterman of Lebanon and Janice (Robert) Sanders of Oklahoma City. He is also survived by his best friend, Larry Menzer.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Donald Peterman; a stepgrandson, Preston Mason; and a special uncle, Earl Peterman, who shared a home with Bill and his family for many years.
The family thanks Heart to Heart Hospice for their many acts of kindness and loving care of our loved one.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the mortuary, with Pastor David Wright officiating. Interment with military rites will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lebanon.
