Janet's Story

Janet Lee Nelson, 78, of Lebanon, passed away at Homewood Health Campus on May 29, 2017. The daughter of James Harold and Alice Elizabeth (Hull) Powell, she was born on Jan. 29, 1939, in Lebanon.
Janet graduated from Lebanon High School. She received her B.A. in elementary education from Ball State University and her master's degree from Purdue University.
On March 12, 1960, she married James B. Nelson at Central Christian Church in Lebanon. They celebrated over 51 years of marriage before he passed away in 2012.
Janet was a member of Central Christian Church, Tourist Club, Delta Kappa Gamma, University Women and Psi Iota Xi. She also served as secretary of the Boone County Retired Teachers Association for many years.
Janet worked in the preschool of Centenary United Methodist Church and taught elementary education in the Lebanon Community school system for many years, most notably second grade at Hattie B. Stokes. She retired in 1997.
Janet is survived by her children, David (Michelle Campbell) Nelson of Lebanon, Julie Nelson of Mattoon, Ill., Mark (Laura Blegen) Nelson of Boulder, Colo., and Mike (Lisa Boyer) Nelson of Lebanon; grandchildren, Kelli (fiancé Chris Allen) Nelson of Chicago, Ill., Jacob Nelson of Lebanon, Annie and Steven Righter of Mattoon ,and Matthew, Nicholas and Allison Nelson of Lebanon; a sister, Barbara (Paul) Jablonski of Greenwood; a brother, Charles Powell of Chicago; a brother-in-law, Eldon (Deanna) McCoskey of Crawfordsville; and a sister-in-law, Mary Jo Nelson of Indianapolis. Janet was preceded in death by her parents and her husband; a sister, Mary Alice (Powell) McCoskey; and granddaughter, Danielle Nelson.
Janet had a passion for collecting keepsakes and memorabilia. She and Jim enjoyed traveling, family camping trips, and touring with their antique cars. They were members of the Lafayette Indiana Historic Automobile Club, the Antique Automobile Club of America, the Vintage Chevrolet Club of America, the Veteran Motor Car Club and the Grand Indiana Auto Tour.
Family and friends will gather Friday, June 2, for visitation from 10 a.m. until time of service at 1 p.m., with Pastor Patricia Case officiating in the Strawmyer & Drury Mortuary, 2400 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. Janet will be laid to rest next to Jim in Oak Hill Cemetery in Lebanon.
