Marguerite's Story

Text size

Marguerite (Hoffman) Spolyar died peacefully on Dec. 18, 2017 at her home in Lebanon, surrounded by her family. She was 79.
Marge was born on March 26, 1938 in Philadelphia. She was the second child of Joseph and Sarah Hoffman. She was a proud graduate of Saint Athanasius School and attended Ambler and Cheltenham High Schools. After graduation, Marge worked at Jefferson Medical College in the pathology department.
In 1960, she married her husband of 57 years, Robert Spolyar, who had graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy the same year. Bob and Marge lived in a number of places during Bob's service in the U.S. Marine Corps. When he left active duty, they spent time in Philadelphia and then Richmond, Va. before taking a transfer to Indiana, where Bob worked as an engineer and attended law school at night. They settled in Lebanon with their growing family.
Everywhere they lived, Marge created warm and loving homes for her family and endeared herself to the community through charity and involvement. She was especially devoted to her beloved parish, Saint Joseph's Catholic Church, where she spent her time in service ministries including Legion of Mary, St. Vincent de Paul, and as a Eucharistic Minister. Marge was a life-long lover of animals, taking in more than one dog that was "free to a good home." And she loved Lebanon. She wrote in her memoir to her children that "living in Lebanon, a small town, has been a great gift for us."
Marge is survived by her husband, Robert Spolyar, Sr., and was a devoted mother to their seven children, Anne (Andrew) Sellers, Robert, Jr. (Isabelle), Joseph, Stephen (Penny), Mary, James (Michele), and Kathleen Spolyar. Marge was a loving grandmother to fourteen grandchildren, Jane and Mary Sellers, Eleanor and Clara Spolyar, Addison, Emily, Meredith and Josie Spolyar, Sarah, Michael and Kristen Spolyar and Andrew, Jacob and Samuel Spolyar. Marge is also survived by her brother, Joseph Hoffman of Philadelphia; and nieces Judy and Janine Hoffman; and nephew Joseph (Theresa) Hoffman. Marge's brother-in-law, Richard (Jan) Spolyar of Carmel, also survives.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22, 2017, at Myers Mortuary in Lebanon with the Rosary beginning at 3:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, 2017, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Legion of Mary, c/o St. Joseph's Parish, P.O. Box 309, Lebanon, IN 46052 or the Humane Society for Boone County, P.O. Box 708, Lebanon, IN 46052.
