Mary's Story

Mrs. Mary Irene McDonald, 92, formerly of Davison, Mich. and Nokomis, Fla., passed away Sunday morning at Homewood Health Campus in Lebanon. She was born on Dec. 9, 1924, in Saginaw, Mich., to the now late Alfred William and Margaret Marilla (Decatur) Hawkins.
Mrs. McDonald was a graduate of Barryton High School in Michigan where she played basketball during her high school years.
On June 8, 1943, she was married to Fort Wayne Cornell in Barryton, Mich. She then was married to George Lignitz on May 18, 1973 in Davison, Mich. She was preceded in death by both husbands.
Mrs. McDonald retired from General Motors/AC Spark Plugs after 30 years of service. She had always said that was where she put the spark in spark plugs! She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She loved her family dearly and enjoyed crocheting, painting, gardening, golfing, and bowling in her spare time.
She was a dedicated member of the Faith Baptist Church in Davison, Mich. for 20 years and the Faith Baptist Church in Nokomis, Fla. for 30 years, and loved working with AWANA at both.
Survivors include four children, Gary Cornell and wife, Marie of Traverse City, Mich., Gregory Cornell and wife, Leslie of Barryton, Mich., Nancy (Cornell) Wade and husband, Wayne of Davison, Mich., Vicki (Cornell) Saalwaechter and husband, Dr. John of Thorntown, Ind.; nine grandchildren, Gina Cornell Stewart, Troy Cornell and wife, Andrea, Stephanie Cornell Brubaker and husband, Dave, Steven Cornell and wife, Patty, Clinton Cornell and wife, Toni, Jeremiah Cornell and wife, Gineen, Shelley Homolka and husband, Adam, Wayne Lee Wade, Mandy Wade Tatum and husband, Chad; and several great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and her husbands, Mary was preceded in death by eight siblings, Ralph, Robert, Edward, Paul, Alfred, Ruth, Margaret, and Ellen; a son, Dennis Allen Cornell; and a grandson-in-law, Michael Stewart.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017 at Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Rd., Davison, Mich., 48423. Interment in Flint Memorial Park. The family will receive visitors from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 18, 2017. Myers Mortuary in Lebanon has been entrusted with the local arrangements.
