Mary's Story

Mary Rose Walker, 88, of Frankfort, passed away on Thursday, March 9, 2017, at Homewood Health Campus in Lebanon. She was born in Martinsville on June 30, 1928, a daughter of the now late Griffith L. and Dessie E. (Manley) Burkett.
She was a 1945 graduate of Martinsville High School. Following high school, she attended college in Omaha, Neb.
On June 21, 1962, she was married to Jerry Lee Walker in Martinsville. Jerry passed away on Oct. 16, 2014.
Mary had worked for Indiana Bell in Martinsville, Bloomington, Crawfordsville, Frankfort and Vincennes for 22 years as dial service supervisor. After retiring from the telephone company, Mary enjoyed being a homemaker and volunteering at Clinton County Boys & Girls Club, in Frankfort, as well as being a Golden Lady volunteer at many area nursing homes and hospitals.
She was a devoted mother, grandmother and sister.
Mary enjoyed drawing, painting, writing poems and ceramics. She was a member of the Alpha & Omega Bible study, Telephone Pioneers Club and a 32-year member of the Mechanicsburg Christian Church.
Survivors include son, John Walker of Frankfort; three grandchildren, Joshua Potts, Ashley Potts and Zachary Potts; sister, Shirley Ann Lockman of Plainfield; sisters-in-law, Barbara Walker of Sheridan and Reva Ward of Brownsburg; brothers-in-law, Tom Walker of Kokomo and Adrian Stanger of Martinsville; and several nieces and nephews
In addition to her parents and husband, Mary was preceded in death by a daughter, Connie Potts; two brothers, Robert Burkett and James Burkett; three sisters, Vivian Stanger, Betty Maxine Lucy and Frances Davis; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Walker and Helen Newkirk; and four brothers-in-law, George Walker, Ted Ward, Lloyd Newkirk and Richard Blunk.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, March 13, Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. Funeral services are to be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 14, at the mortuary. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lebanon.
