Mildred F. Bates Hawkins, 86, passed away on Sept. 10, 2016, at Lakeview Manor in Indianapolis, after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's disease.
Mildred was born in Talbot, Ind., on April 10, 1930, to Denver D. and Redie Ann Graves.
In 1948, she married Glenmore Luther "Joe" Bates; he passed away in 1966. She married Kiefer Hawkins in 1969; he passed away in 1996.
Mildred is survived by three children, Karen Hunter of Shelbyville, Jerry Bates of Clemmons, N.C., and David Bates of Speedway. She was the proud grandmother of Ryan Bramblett, Brett Bramblett, Jamie Turner, Jessica Jones, Adam Bates, Cory Bates and Cody Bates. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren.
Mildred was a graduate of Thorntown High School. She was employed for several years at the Thorntown Textile Co., and held several other jobs. After retiring to Lake Okeechobee, Fla., in 1983, she and her husband enjoyed several years of traveling. She then returned to Indiana after the loss of her husband in 1996, and resided in Lebanon. For the last 10 years, she has been a resident of Lakeview Manor.
Mildred enjoyed watching sports, especially the Pacers, Colts, baseball and golf. Before and during her stay at Lakeview Manor, she was always eager to play bingo and other board games.
Mildred was preceded in death by one sister and four brothers.
Visitation will be 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, at Myers and Hunt Mortuary in Thorntown. The funeral will follow at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the mortuary in Thorntown. Interment will take place at Maple Lawn Cemetery in Thorntown.
