Mr. Barkman, 79, of Matthews, North Carolina, died Nov. 28, 2017 surrounded by family at his residence after a 10 year illness.
Born in Indianapolis, Paul was a graduate of Shortridge High School, Hanover College and earned a Master's in Business Administration from Indiana University. After active duty in the Navy, he retired from the Naval Reserve, serving a total of 21 years and rising to the level of Commander. His love for the Navy and his country never faltered, and he always wore his Navy Veteran hat proudly. His professional career was spent in International Business where his family spent seven years in Tokyo, three in Honolulu and the remainder in Cincinnati. He never tired of international travel and learning about other cultures.
Survived by his wife of 49 years, Chlois; daughters Phyllis (Dave) Ferrell and Tricia (Mike) Green; and the grandchildren from whom he derived so much joy, Luke, 15, and Jack, 11, Ferrell and Ben, 11, and Brooklyn, 8, Green. Ever the tenacious salesman, Paul left a permanent legacy represented by the lyrics from his favorite song, "I faced it all and I stood tall and did it my way."
Visitation will be from 1:30-3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 3, with funeral immediately following at Heritage Funeral Home, 3700 Forest Lawn Dr. Matthews, North Carolina 28104.
