Petra's Story

Petra Soto Mirelez, beloved mother and grandmother passed away Feb. 5, 2018 at the age of 88 years. The daughter of the late Pantaleon and Victoriana (Landeros) Soto, Petra was born April 8, 1929 in San Marcos, Texas. She married Salomon Mirelez on March 27, 1947 in Pharr, Texas. They were married for 53 years. Mr. Mirelez preceded her in death 17 years ago on Nov. 7, 2000. Petra was a member of Old Union Church in Jamestown. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and most enjoyed spending time with family.
In 1950, Petra and Salomon settled in Boone County following many years of field labor work throughout the United States. They purchased their first farm in 1965 where they grew tomatoes for 45 years. Petra operated a farmers market out of their barn, while Salomon tended to the acres grown for Red Gold Foods.
Her memory will be cherished by her children, Maria (Mirelez) MacKinnon, Solomon Mirelez, Jr., Fernando Mirelez, Diana (Mirelez) Patiño and Mario Mirelez; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. One sister, Paula S. Caudillo also survives.
She was preceded in death by an infant daughter Ida Mirelez; one granddaughter, Anna Marie Mirelez; one great-grandson, Sage Michael Yelm; sibling brothers, German Soto, Eugenio Soto, Placido Soto, Gregorio Soto, Alejandro Soto, Rufino Soto and Jose Soto; sibling sisters, Maria (1st) Soto, Manuela S. Davila, Isabel S. Flores, Josefina S. Gonzalez, Alvina S. Valtierra and Maria (2nd) Soto.
Family and friends will gather at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, 2018, until time of service at 12 p.m. at Old Union Church, Jamestown, with grandson Christian MacKinnon officiating. Petra will be laid to rest in Old Union Cemetery, Jamestown.
The Mirelez family gratefully acknowledges the Crown Pointe Communities assisted living staff, the Extended Care Unit staff of Witham Hospital, the Homewood Health Campus staff, and the Great Lakes Caring Hospice staff for their heartfelt care.
