Rev. Howard's Story
Rev. Howard Barefoot departed this life and went to be with the Lord on Feb. 2, 2018 at the Sturgill Hospice House located in Spring Hill, Florida. Since 2000, Howard and his wife, Dorothy, spent winter months at the Wesleyan Village Retirement Community in Brooksville, Florida.
Howard was born in Durham, North Carolina on Jan. 4, 1932 to the late Adlie and Myrtle Barefoot. He graduated from high school at Pilgrim Bible College, Kernersville, North Carolina. There he met and married Dorothy Kiser Barefoot on June 2, 1953. In 1956 he graduated from college at Frankfort Pilgrim College, Frankfort.
During the years of their ministry, they spent four years at the All Tribes Indian School, Bernalillo, New Mexico where they taught and he was dean of boys. Moving to Huntington, Indiana they pastored the Pilgrim Holiness Church and he earned a Master's in Education from St. Francis College, Fort Wayne. They had three children, Daniel, Paul, and Sharon.
The next years were spent in pastoring and teaching. Howard taught at Harney Elementary and at the Lebanon Middle School for 22 years. Their last pastorate, at Colfax Wesleyan Church, was 17 years.
Retiring from the classroom in 1996 and the ministry in 1998, he spent his time ministering in nursing homes and as interim pastors and as a guest minister.
As a minister, Howard was a man who loved people and he had many friends. He was compassionate and loving and deeply cared for his family and parishioners. He was said to have the world as his parish.
He will be remembered as a teacher who loved his students, always wanting them to learn and do their own problem solving.
He had a passion for the Lord's work. After his disability forced him to use a wheelchair, he often used his phone to talk and pray with others who needed a friend and pastor.
Preceding him in death was his daughter, Elizabeth Ann, who was born and went to Heaven on March 26, 1962. Siblings who preceded him in death are Elizabeth, Edward, Adlie, Juanita and James.
He leaves his wife of 63 years, Dorothy. Also his sons, Daniel Barefoot of Los Angeles, Paul (Sheila) Barefoot (Sheila) of Dallas, and a daughter Sharon (Don) Cady of Indianapolis. He loved his 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by a brother, Paul C. Barefoot of Colville, Washington and twin sisters, Myrlene Dicheck and Josephine Parker of Durham, North Carolina.
