Ross J.'s Story
Ross J. Neese, 88, of Lebanon, passed away peacefully on Monday, Dec. 5, 2016, in Columbus. He was born in Lebanon, on April 3, 1928, a son of the now late Roscoe Neese and Carol (Cook) Neese.
Ross graduated from Lebanon High School in 1947.
He was married to Phyllis Joan Thrine on April 3, 1948, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lebanon. Mrs. Neese survives.
Ross was employed at Metzger Lumber Company, and then went to the Lebanon Fire Department in 1950. He served as assistant fire chief from 1968 to 1979, and then retired. He was then employed part time for 22 years with Russell and Hitch Funeral home.
In 1980, he and his wife moved to Monticello, where he was employed by Miller and Voorhis Funeral Home. He retired from there after 13 years. Ross and Phyllis spent several winters in Sebring, Fla. They moved back to Lebanon in 2004.
Ross was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He enjoyed reading and playing golf, and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. He was a former Elks member, a 50-year member of the Eagles, and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include wife, Phyllis Neese of Lebanon; children, Theresa J. Westerfeld and husband, Ross, of Columbus, and Timothy F. Neese and wife, Paula, of Elkhart; grandchildren, Clayton Westerfeld and wife, Chessie, of Columbus, Natalie Wanstrath and husband, Nathan, of Batesville, Adam Neese and wife, Susan, of San Diego, Calif., Drew Neese and wife, Danielle, of Elkhart, and Emily Neese of Indianapolis; brother, Byron Neese of Lebanon; and 13 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Ross was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Neese; and sisters, Erma Webb, Margery Buckingham and Mariam Schuck.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. The rosary will begin at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 9, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 319 E. South St., Lebanon, with the Rev. Timothy Kroeger officiating. Interment will follow services at St. Joseph Cemetery in Lebanon.
