Mr. Roy E. Wood, 87, of Lebanon, passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, on Nov. 28, 2016, at St. Vincent Heart Hospital in Indianapolis. Roy was born on April 26, 1929, in Lafayette, and was a son of the now late Roy M. and Eva (Behringer) Wood.
Roy attended Purdue University, where he earned his teaching degree in 1953. After graduating from Purdue, he taught at Howe Military Base. He was later drafted in to the United States Army, where he served abroad from 1953 to 1955.
After returning home, he took a teaching position in Lebanon and married Ernestine Crosby in 1957. Together they had four sons Philip (55), Sam (48), Andrew (46) and Peter (44).
Roy will be remembered by most as a dedicated educator, with his career in Lebanon spanning over 37 years. He was beloved and respected by both his students and fellow teachers. He believed in the power of education.
Roy's dedication to service and his community has been recognized throughout his life. He and his family have been longtime members of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He was actively involved in many areas of the church including the Holy Name Society.
He served for 20 years as a member of the Boone County Council, and was highly involved with the Lebanon Lions Club for over 50 years. Roy was the recipient of Indiana's Distinguished Hoosier Award and the Lions Club International Melvin Jones Fellow Award.
Roy is survived by his wife, Ernestine (Crosby) Wood; his sons, Phillip (Karen) Wood, Samuel (Julie) Wood, Andrew Wood and Peter (Rachana) Wood; grandchildren, Daniella, Caleb, Gabrielle, Cameron, Priya, Vikram, Carson and Christian; and siblings, Janie (Tim) McGinley, Joanne (Mic) Howard and Mike Wood. Roy was preceded in death by his parents and twin brother, Robert.
All are welcome to attend the viewing at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 319 E. South St., Lebanon, on Friday, Dec. 2, from 9 to 11 a.m. A funeral Mass will follow at 11 a.m. at the church, after which Roy will be laid to rest at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lebanon.
