Mrs. Elsie Mae Owens, 99, of Lebanon, passed away Friday, Jan. 13, 2017, at Homewood Health Campus in Lebanon. She was born on June 12, 1917, in Rockcastle County, Ky., to the now late John Hale and Sarah (Hale) Hale.
On Feb. 25, 1933, she was married to Casper Martin Owens in Rockcastle County, Ky. Mr. Owens passed away on Feb. 9, 1988.
In 1939, Elsie and her husband moved from Kentucky to Sheridan, and then to Lebanon in 1941, where she had since resided.
She took great pride in being a homemaker, and loved taking care of her family. Elsie enjoyed sewing, gardening and working in the yard. She continued to do all of her own yard work well into her 80s.
Since 1947, Elsie had been a devoted member of the Assembly of God Church in Lebanon, where she taught Sunday school for 40 years.
Survivors include four children, Eleanor G. Syler of Springfield, Mo., Donald G. Owens and wife, Becky, of Easley, S.C., Ada Marlene Smith of Rossville and Terry Leigh Brown of Jamestown; 14 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Hazel Jones and husband, Rex, of Lebanon; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Elsie was preceded in death by two brothers, Ross Hale and Virgil Hale; a sister, Bertha Linville; a daughter, Ersual Jean Owens; four sons-in-law, C.W. Syler, Dale Owens, Robert Smith and Richard Brown; two great-granddaughters; and two great-grandsons.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. today, Jan. 17, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. Funeral services are planned for 2 p.m. today at the mortuary, with the Rev. Dr. Eleanor G. Syler officiating. Interment will follow services at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lebanon.
