Mr. Howard Lee Heffner, 82, of Lebanon, passed away Friday, Oct. 7, 2016. He was born Dec. 21, 1933, to the now late J. Dorsey and Martha (Pittenger) Heffner, in Lebanon.
Howard was a lifelong resident of Boone County, and spent several winters enjoying the warm Florida sunshine.
He attended Pinnell High School, the home of the Purple Dragons. He then was a corporal in the United States Marine Corps, serving during the Korean War. Upon his return home, he joined his brother Jack and his father in the family business, Heffner Foods, where he continued to work until his retirement.
Howard married the now late Caroline Jean Stoner on Feb. 8, 1956, in Advance. They have two children, Melody Statzer of Cicero and Douglas Heffner of Lebanon. They were blessed with three grandchildren, Christopher (Nova) Heffner of Cicero, Melissa Heffner of Indianapolis and Andrew (Kimberly) Heffner of Lebanon. Recently he became "Great Poppy," being wonderfully blessed with his first great-granddaughter, Katelyn.
All thru his children's school years, Howard could be found at all the school activities his kids were involved in. When the grandchildren came along, he followed them in everything he could. Poppy was noticed running up and down the fence, rooting Chris on when he scored a home run, and giving Melissa advice after her golf meets on what he noticed she might need to work on. And each week, he could be found climbing the grandstands to watch Andrew play football in high school and college.
In his early years, Howard and his brother raced horses and then moved on to go-carts, a different horse-powered racing event. Howard loved to play golf, and his favorite place was Cool Lake. He could hardly wait to go there on his golf days to see who he could have fun with. He loved sports, whether it was NASCAR, IndyCar, Colts, Pacers, IU or WEBO.
Howard leaves behind his sister, Patty (Marvin) Solomon of Lebanon; sisters-in-law, Meredith Sloan of Lebanon and Linda Woodard of Thorntown; brother-in-law, Harold W. (Janice) Stoner of Nashville, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and beloved wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, Jack Heffner; nephews, Dennis Heffner and Donald Heffner; son-in-law, Robert Statzer; and daughter-in-law, Sandra Heffner.
The family wishes to thank Great Lakes Hospice for taking care of our Father/Poppy these last couple of years; everyone who took care of him was great. We especially want to say a very special and blessed thank you to Sherri Tolley, his "housekeeper" and caregiver, whom the family has adopted as one of ours.
Visitation is planned for 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at the mortuary, with Jim Coyle officiating. Interment with military rites will follow at Old Union Cemetery in rural Jamestown.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to the Sandy Heffner Scholarship, c/o Western Boone Education Foundation, 1201 N. SR 75, Thorntown, IN 46071.
