Joseph's Story

Joseph Francis Artman, 93, of Sheridan, passed away Monday, Nov. 28, 2016, at the Rawlins House of Pendleton. Born Feb. 12, 1923, in Boone County, he was a son of the now late Roy Sr. and Lina (Akers) Artman.
After attending Whitestown High School, Joe served his country as a soldier in the United States Army. Serving during World War II, Joe was attached to the 742nd Ordnance Company within the 42nd Infantry Division, known as the 42nd Rainbow Division. The 42nd Rainbows were deployed throughout the Rhineland area of Central Europe. During their campaign, the 42nd Rainbow division helped liberate over 30,000 inmates from the Nazi concentration camps at Dachau.
When Joe left the service, he hired on with Bantam Tractor Manufacturing in Lebanon as a field rep and mechanic for about 15 years.
A lifelong farmer, Joe had a passion for antique tractors. He traveled all across the country searching out, collecting, restoring and showing Bantam Tractors.
He was a member of the Boone County Antique Tractor Club, the K.V. Elliott Post 67 of the American Legion in Sheridan, and a member of the Six Points Wesleyan Church in Sheridan.
Joe is survived by his wife, Joan (Moore) Clark-Artman. She and Joe were married on Aug. 1, 1981. He is also survived by his stepdaughter, Patricia (David) Ballenger of Pendleton; two grandchildren, Donald Wesley Artman of Indianapolis and Rebecca Lynn (Steve) Oliver of Spokane, Wash.; two stepgrandchildren, Angela Ballenger and Nicole (Erik) Hays, both of Pendleton; two great- grandchildren, Riley and Austin Hays; and two nephews, Gary (Peggy) Artman and Mike Artman.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Geraldine (Greathouse) Artman, in 1979; his son, Robert Joe Artman; two brothers, John Artman and Roy Artman Jr.; and his sister, Mary Chapman.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, at the Kercheval Funeral Home, 306 E. 10th St., Sheridan. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lebanon. Pastor Steve Martin will be officiating.
