Robert W. Freshour

Mr. Robert W. "Bob" Freshour, 88, of Lebanon, passed away on Friday morning, March 3, 2017, at St. Vincent Hospice in Indianapolis. He was born on May 14, 1928, in White County, a son of the now late Arthur M. and Mary E. (Johnson) Freshour.
Bob was a graduate of Royal Center High School. He attained his associate degree from Ivy Tech in Lafayette and also attended Purdue University. He was a Korean War Veteran and served on the front lines from July 1950 to January 1952, as a tech sergeant in the Army's 24th Infantry Division. He received two Bronze Stars, a Combat Badge, Korean Service Medal, Unit President Citation and Good Conduct Medal. An image of his face is on the Korean War Monument in Washington, D.C., and a written copy of his experiences of the Korean War was placed in the Library of Congress by Senator Richard Lugar. He was a member of the Central Indiana Korean War Veterans Association.
On Oct. 18, 1953, he was married to Janet M. Poynter at the Dover Christian Church, and they spent 63 years together. Janet survives.
Bob had resided in Lebanon for the past 63 years. He worked for Shumate Business Forms in Lebanon and Allison Coupon Company in Indianapolis. His most recent job was with the Lebanon Utilities, where he held the position of superintendent. He had worked there for 22 years, retiring in 1990. After retirement, he worked as a courier for Witham Hospital Toxicology Lab and a bus driver for the Lebanon Community School Corporation.
He was a member of Central Christian Church, where he and Janet sponsored the junior and senior high school groups for many years. Bob coached Lebanon Little League baseball, and coached sixth -grade and middle school basketball.
Bob was proud to be a member of the board of directors for the Lebanon Boys & Girls Club for 47 years. He supervised the construction of the present facility during the late 1980s, contributing over 3,000 hours of labor. In 1992, he received the Boys & Girls Club Indiana Area Council for Outstanding Board Volunteerism and also the Midwest Region Area Council Outstanding Board Volunteer awards.
In 2003, he was given the top honor, the Indiana Sagamore of the Wabash award, by Governor Joseph Kernan for his contributions toward the betterment of the lives of youth in our community. In addition, Bob was a member of the American Legion, past Rotary Club officer, and past chairman and officer of Boone County Zoning Appeals.
Bob enjoyed his family and friends, always helping them with yardwork, snow removal, and many other odd jobs. He and Janet enjoyed traveling to all of the 50 states, Canada and Europe.
Survivors include wife, Janet M. Freshour of Lebanon; two children, Kirk A. (Beverly) Freshour of Lebanon and Pamela S. (Dennis) D'Amico of Lebanon; three grandchildren, Kelli (Travis) Brunes of Lebanon, Jason (Ashley) Behr of Dallas, Texas, and Dana (Jeff) Stevens of Troy, Mo.; four stepgrandchildren, Holee Bailey of Indianapolis, Nancy Bailey of Indianapolis, Matt D'Amico of Austin, Texas, and Denise (Jeremy) DeForge of Alameda, Calif.; five great-grandchildren, Kollin, Cannon, Memphis, Rhys and Dax; sister, Linda Chappell of Lafayette; sisters-in-law, Jean Acton of Lebanon and Jane (Harold) Swisher of Indianapolis; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Freshour; a sister, Marie Martin; and a grandson, Gregory Freshour.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday, March 9, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. Memorial services, with military rites, are planned for 6 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary, with the Rev. Brad Miller officiating. Burial of Ashes will take place at a later date.
