Robert's Story

Robert W. Staton, 87, of Lebanon, passed away September 20, 2016, at Witham Memorial Hospital in Lebanon.
Robert was born on November 30, 1928, the son of the now late Clyde and Elizabeth (Owens) Staton.
Robert graduated from Whitestown High School in 1946. After high school, he attended Butler University on a basketball scholarship. He then served as a sergeant in the United States Army from 1950 until 1952, during the Korean conflict. Robert worked for the Livengood Slaughter House for four years. He retired from Rock Island Refinery in 1984, after working there for 35 years. Robert was one of 10 siblings; he had six brothers who served in the United States Army.
Robert was an avid golfer and learned to golf in the Army in 1952, when he was a caddy for the upper brass. He taught golf and he bought Kent Frandsen his first set of golf clubs, along with numerous others. In 1960, Robert was the Ulen Country Club golf tournament champion, and in 1961, he was runner-up to Lee Ping. After his retirement, he worked maintenance at Wolf Run Golf Course, at Golf Club of Indiana for 3 months, and at Trophy Club for 4 and half years.
Robert enjoyed traveling. He went on 19 trips to Canada with his friends and family to fish. Robert also took 27 trips to Myrtle Beach with John Bradley and other close golf friends, where they played at over 110 golf courses. He traveled to 49 states in the United States, all but Delaware. Robert also enjoyed traveling to National Parks.
Robert enjoyed attending numerous Broadway plays and he enjoyed classical music. He was proud of his math skills and he was a huge basketball fan. Robert was a Junior League and Pony League coach and he was the President of the Lebanon Sports Booster Club for many years.
Survivors include his brother Charles Staton of Akron, IN and the family of John Bradley, his adopted family. In addition to his parents Clyde and Elizabeth Staton, Robert was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.
Family and friends will gather Friday, September 23, 2016 for visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of services at 12 p.m. with the Reverend Joe Staton officiating in the Strawmyer & Drury Mortuary, 2400 N. Lebanon Street, Lebanon. Robert will be laid to rest at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lebanon.
