Sheila McCoury Perry, of Banner Elk, N.C., passed away on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017, at her residence.
Sheila was born Nov. 14, 1949, a daughter of the now late Eddie C. and Anna Roth McCoury. Her paternal grandparents were TY and Maude (Pittman) McCoury, of Avery County, N.C., and her maternal grandparents were Adam and Rosa (Kremer) Roth of Boone County.
Sheila graduated in 1968 as valedictorian from Cranberry High School, having achieved the highest grade of any graduate in the state of North Carolina. She attended Lees McRae College in Banner Elk. She also received her CDL license to help drive her brother's truck, as he had heart problems.
Sheila first taught at Banner Elk Elementary School. She then became a very successful real estate broker and owner of Sheila McCoury Perry Properties for 35 years. She also taught real estate classes. The public admired her knowledge of the mountain properties. One of her first sales was land for St. Bernadete Catholic Church in Linville, N.C.
She is survived by her husband, Jim Perry; her son, Braxton Perry of Charlotte, N.C.; her three sisters, Bertha Young and husband, Dale, of Newland, N.C., Mary Perez and husband, Roberto, of High Point, N.C., and Rosa King and husband, John, of Lebanon; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and her many former Scouts from Troop 807 in Banner Elk.
She was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents; her two sisters, Dr. Colleen McCoury-Martincak and Barbara Ward; her four brothers, Tommy, TY, Eddie Jr. and David McCoury; and two nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial will be Friday, Feb. 3, at 11 a.m. in St. Bernadete Catholic Church in Linville, with Father Christopher Gober officiating. Burial will follow in the McCoury Rock Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Bernadete Catholic Church, 2085 NC 105, Linville, NC 28646; to St. Jude Children's Hospital; or to a charity of your choice.
The care of Sheila and her family has been entrusted to Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home of Newland, N.C.
