Shirley's Story

Mrs. Shirley Ann Woody, 84, of Lebanon, passed away Sunday night, July 16, 2017. She was born in Boone County on May 23, 1933, the daughter of the now late Charles H. and Opal Marie (Smith) Thompson.
On Sept. 19, 1954, she was married to Jon Leonard Woody at the Dover Christian Church. He passed away on Nov. 24, 2004.
Shirley was a lifelong resident of Boone County. She was a 1951 graduate of Dover High School, and had attended Purdue University for a year.
Shirley helped her husband with the family farm and volunteered at Witham Memorial Hospital for 34 years. She was an active member of Dover Christian Church.
Shirley was a distinguished member of the Extension Homemakers and its various branches, for which she served as an officer and committee member on the local, district, state and national level. She hosted several exchange Homemakers from various foreign countries, and had traveled abroad on a number of occasions as part of her work with the organization.
She was an avid supporter and worker for the Republican party, and was honored by the Indiana Federation of Republican Women for her outstanding service and leadership to the GOP. She was a member of the Boone County Republican Women's Club and had served as a two-term vice president for the IFRW, district director of Sen. Richard Lugar's re-election committee, a vice precinct committee person and had volunteered on local and state committees through the years.
Also, to her credit for community involvement and service, Shirley was honored by being named a Sagamore of the Wabash.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and loved her family dearly.
Survivors include two daughters, Vaughnie M. (Joe) Slipher of Thorntown and Vivian A. (Mick) Norman of Lebanon; four grandchildren, Justin (Lindsey) Slipher of Lake St. Louis, Mo., Jay (Sara) Slipher of Jamestown, Lindsey Norman of Thorntown, and Michelle (Joseph) Stambro of Lebanon; three great-grandchildren, Jacob Norman, Brody Slipher and Brooklyn Slipher. In addition to her parents and her husband, Shirley was preceded in death by a half brother, Richard Ford; and a half sister, Corabelle Evans.
Visitation is planned for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 22, at the Dover Christian Church, 955 N. SR 75, Lebanon. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the church. Interment will follow at Dover Cemetery in Dover.
